South Africa Wine Evening in-Review

We are delighted with the wonderful turn-out and great response we received to our South African Wine event last Thursday evening (March 15).  It was a tremendous success at which we enjoyed

Rollo Gabb and Richard Smyth at Edge Restaurant

Richard Smyth from Bibendum Wine & Rollo Gabb from Journey’s End Winery

welcoming many of our regulars as well as several new food and drink enthusiasts to sample a specially prepared menu and selection of wines from South Africa.

Jubilant guests arrived early evening to be greeted by a perfectly chilled glass of Weather Station Sauvignon Blanc and a selection of beautifully presented hand-passed canapés as our guest speaker, Rollo Gabb, of the family run Journey’s End Wine Estate in the Cape Winelands of South Africa, mingled and chatted with guests prior to dinner.

Our exquisite and specially prepared menu inspired by South African culture & cuisine was beautifully complimented by this evening’s wine selection.  Prior to each dinner course Rollo would share an amusing tale, a little about the wine, the winery, and the family business.  The passion and knowledge that he imparted to our select group of wine enthusiasts throughout the evening allowed everyone to get involved and pick Rollo’s brain about all aspects of the world of wines.

Our dinner menu included South African staples such as Home cured Biltong, Lamb Sosatie and Braaied Tiger Prawns, accompanied by a Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2011.  This was followed by a main course of Boerewore (South African pork sausage) and a delicious lightly spiced tomato and potato cassoulet, vegetables, and jus –  all washed down with The Cape Doctor Cabernet Sauvignon, 2006 and a Single Vineyard Shiraz, 2006.  Dessert completed the menu with a Custard tart, almond crunch and gooseberry and vanilla compote and the wine was The Haystack, Chardonnay, 2011.

We received some great feedback from those gathered and seemingly the Single Vineyard Chardonnay and Single Vineyard Shiraz stood out as the favourites among 5 top class South African wines.  Do come down to Edge and try some of the excellent South African wine we stock in our Wine Cellar.  The weather is getting brighter and warmer so come and enjoy the view from the terrace overlooking the sea.

We look forward to showcasing another selection of wines from another interesting location very soon.
